What do mice look like?

House mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents, usually measuring between 2.5 and 3.75 inches in length, with a tail of similar length. They have round ears, small eyes, and pointed snouts. Their fur can vary in color from light brown to gray to black, and they have a lighter-colored underside.

Are mice dangerous?

While house mice might look innocent enough, they can be a health risk. They are known to carry and transmit various diseases, such as salmonella, hantavirus, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. Additionally, their droppings and urine can contaminate surfaces and food, which contributes to the spread of disease/illness.

House mice can cause damage to structures and electrical wiring, leading to potential fire hazards. They also damage belongings with their chewing and nesting habits as well as with their feces and urine.

How can I tell if I have a mouse problem?

If you suspect a house mouse infestation, there are several signs to look out for. The most obvious indication of a mouse problem is seeing live rodents in your attic, crawlspace, garage, or elsewhere in your home. You may notice small droppings in areas such as cabinets, drawers, or along walls. You may also see gnaw marks on food packaging or wood, as well as grease marks left behind from the mouse’s fur as they travel along walls or floors. You might also hear scratching or scurrying sounds at night, typically from within the walls or in the ceiling.

What attracts mice?

House mice are attracted to areas where they can find food, water, and shelter. They tend to seek out warm, dark, and secluded areas where they can hide during the day and come out at night to forage for food. They are particularly drawn to areas where food is easily accessible, such as kitchens, pantries, and dining areas.

Of course, there must also be an easy way in for these rodents. They are agile and can squeeze through small openings, such as gaps around pipes, cables, and vents as well as under garage doors and through the spaces around the crawl space door.
