Description
These are the large black or reddish-black ants, workers up to half an inch, that homeowners spot trailing along baseboards or countertops at night. Outside they nest in stumps and landscape timbers. The trouble starts when a satellite colony moves into the structure, and the wood they choose tells the story: damp sills, leak-softened window frames, and moisture-affected joists are their preferred real estate.
Carpenter ants are one of the five wood destroying insects flagged on Virginia real estate inspection reports, so an active infestation can hold up a closing the same way termites can.
