Description
German cockroaches are the small, fast, tan roaches that infest kitchens and bathrooms, breed in weeks, and ride into homes in boxes, bags, and secondhand appliances. They are the hardest household pest to clear with store-bought products because sprays scatter them into new harborage while the egg cases keep hatching. Our German roach work is baiting-based, methodical, and includes follow-up, because a single missed egg case restarts the clock.
American cockroaches, the two-inch reddish ones Hampton Roads calls waterbugs, live in sewers, crawl spaces, and mulch, and wander indoors through drains and door gaps, especially in humid weather. They rarely breed inside dry living space, so controlling them is mostly about exclusion and the damp zones under and around the home.
Two roaches, two problems
German cockroach or American cockroach
Two roaches dominate Hampton Roads, and calling both of them roaches is what sends people to the wrong product. These are two determinations, not two choices.
German cockroach
Small, tan, fast, indoors
- Infests kitchens and bathrooms, and breeds in weeks
- Rides in on boxes, bags, and secondhand appliances
- Pepper-like droppings along cabinet hinges and drawer corners
- A musty odor in heavily infested areas
The hardest household pest to clear with store-bought products.
American cockroach
Two inches, reddish, the local waterbug
- Lives in sewers, crawl spaces, and mulch
- Wanders indoors through drains and door gaps, especially in humid weather
- Appears in bathrooms or basements after rain
- Rarely breeds inside dry living space
Mostly a matter of exclusion and the damp zones under and around the home.
Field indicators
Evidence, in the order it is usually found
The first sighting is usually at night in a kitchen, and by then the droppings have been on the cabinet hinges for a while.
- 01 Small tan roaches in kitchen cabinets, under sinks, or near the coffee maker
- 02 Pepper-like droppings along cabinet hinges and drawer corners
- 03 A musty odor in heavily infested areas
- 04 Large reddish roaches appearing in bathrooms or basements after rain
Grade level
Where it lives in the structure
Two species, two depths. One breeds in the cabinet you are standing at, the other is commuting up from below.

Sill, band, and floor framing

Crawl space
American roaches live in crawl spaces and come up through drains and door gaps.
Soil and grade
Sewers and mulch outside the wall, which is where the waterbugs are arriving from.
Consequence
What it costs to ignore
The German roach is the one that compounds, and it compounds on a clock.
Reproduction
They breed in weeks, and a single missed egg case restarts the clock.
Wrong product
Repellent sprays scatter German roaches deeper into walls and cabinets, and they do nothing to egg cases. The population looks smaller for a week and then rebounds.
Documentation
In rentals the cost is also paperwork, which is why we coordinate with tenants and property managers and document everything for the file.
Correction
What we do about it
Two species, two programs, and both of them are finished by verification rather than by a visit count.
- 01 Until monitors come up clean
German roaches: bait and regulate
For German roaches we run a gel-bait and insect-growth-regulator program with scheduled follow-ups until sticky monitors come up clean.
- 02 Entry zones and humidity
American roaches: exclude and dry
For American roaches we treat entry zones, address crawl space humidity, and close the gaps they use.
- 03 Documented for the file
Rentals and businesses

Cockroaches: quick answers
01 Why do I keep seeing roaches after spraying store products?
Repellent sprays scatter German roaches deeper into walls and cabinets, and they do nothing to egg cases. The population looks smaller for a week and then rebounds. Baiting programs work because roaches carry the bait back to the harborage and to each other.
