Adults live on the pet, but the eggs do not stay there: they roll off wherever the animal rests, turning carpet, pet bedding, couch cushions, and the back seat into nurseries. The hopping adults you see are a small fraction of the infestation, and the rest of it is in life stages you cannot see.
The stage that beats DIY treatment is the pupa. Flea pupae wait inside a sticky, debris-coated cocoon that sprays do not penetrate well, and they can sit dormant for weeks until heat, vibration, and carbon dioxide announce a host. Your half of the job matters as much as ours. Daily vacuuming vibrates pupae into hatching and physically removes eggs, hot washing clears pet bedding, and the pet needs to be on veterinarian recommended flea control at the same time. And when the source is wildlife, feral cats, raccoons, or opossums denning under a deck or in the crawl space, we deal with the entry points too, or the house simply reloads.

01 We do not even own a pet. Why do we have fleas?
Usually because an animal you do not own lives closer than you think: feral cats or wildlife under the home or deck, or a previous occupant whose pet left the immature stages behind when they moved out. The fix has to include the source, not just the carpet.
