Description
The most common indoor ant in Hampton Roads is the odorous house ant, the little brown ant that shows up around sinks and pet bowls and smells like rotten coconut when crushed. Colonies run multiple queens and multiple satellite nests, which is why spraying the visible trail so often makes things worse: the colony fractures, and one nuisance nest becomes three.
Outdoors, pavement ants mound between driveway joints, and red imported fire ants have pushed steadily into southeastern Virginia lawns. Fire ant mounds in a yard with kids or pets are worth treating promptly, because their sting is genuinely nasty and they defend the mound in numbers.
